Setting Up a VPN Connection under Windows 98


Step 1 Open 'Dial-Up Networking' in 'My Computer'
Step 2 Make a new connection
Step 3 Give the connection a friendly name, and choose the 'Microsoft VPN Adapter' from the list of devices.
Step 4 Enter the domain name (or IP address) of your VPN Connection
e.g. vpn.yourname.com
Step 5 Press finish on the status page
Step 6 Double click on the new connection and enter your username & password.
Confirm the name of your VPN server at the bottom of the dialog
If you experience any problems connecting, right-click on the connection and check the following properties.
Step 7 Under the advanced settings for the new connection, make sure that only TCP/IP is checked
Step 8 The TCP/IP Settings should all be set to defaults exactly like the picture
Status This icon is used to signify an open network connection,
including an open VPN connection, you make double-click
on the icon for your VPN connection to check status or disconnect


Note 1: Once a VPN connection of this type is established, it should be viewed as an actual
phisical connection to the remote network with all the same benefits and limitations as well
as what is mentioned in Note 2.

Note 2: While this type of VPN connection is active, all other internet traffic is blocked,
so web-surfing, external email, chat programs, streaming audio/video etc. will cease to
function until the conection is closed.
